Possible to modify own unit and dates and other peoples units but not other peoples availability dates?

We have a set of units that are owned by different people and each have there own drupal user account. We require an access control role that allows someone to edit their own unit including availability dates and also allow a user to edit all other units but not other peoples availability dates. Is this possible? It appears to I'd have to add this privelege myself to the code.
